Duel

35mm1971ThrillerEdition: 1971

Duel (1971) is the legendary psychological thriller that marked Steven Spielberg's feature-length directorial breakthrough. Originally produced as a television movie for ABC, the film premiered on 13 November 1971 and quickly became recognised as one of the finest suspense thrillers ever made for television. Based on a short story by Richard Matheson, Duel follows David Mann (Dennis Weaver), an ordinary businessman travelling through the California desert who becomes the target of a mysterious and relentless truck driver. What begins as a minor confrontation on a lonely highway soon escalates into a terrifying game of survival, as Mann finds himself pursued by a monstrous, rust-covered Peterbilt tanker truck.

THE DIFFERENCES

What changed in this version?

This presentation preserves the original 1971 television version of Duel, sourced from a 16mm film print and scanned at an impressive 5K resolution.

Unlike the extended theatrical version released internationally, the original television cut runs approximately 74 minutes and represents Spielberg's initial vision as broadcast to American audiences in November 1971.

The high-resolution scan captures the distinctive characteristics of the original film material, including natural film grain, period colour reproduction and the photographic texture associated with 16mm prints.

Rather than presenting the film through modern digital processing, this edition offers an opportunity to experience Duel with the authentic appearance of a surviving film print.

Original TV Version vs Theatrical Version

Following the success of its television premiere, Duel was expanded for theatrical distribution, with approximately 15 minutes of additional material filmed.

The extended version includes several sequences absent from the original broadcast, such as the opening encounter with the school bus, the railway crossing confrontation and additional scenes featuring David Mann.

This original television edition retains the tighter pacing and relentless suspense that first captivated viewers in 1971.

A Piece of Spielberg History

Made when Steven Spielberg was just 24 years old, Duel demonstrated his remarkable ability to build tension through camera movement, editing and visual storytelling.

With minimal dialogue and an almost entirely unseen antagonist, the film transforms an ordinary American highway into a nightmarish battleground.

This 16mm 5K scan of the original television version is a fascinating archival presentation of a landmark production in television and film history, offering enthusiasts and collectors a chance to revisit Duel in its original broadcast form.
