Robocop

35mm1987Science Fiction, Action, Crime, ThrillerEdition: 1987

Set in a crime-ridden, near-future Detroit, RoboCop follows police officer Alex Murphy, who is brutally murdered by a gang of criminals shortly after transferring to a dangerous new precinct. With the city's police force struggling to maintain order and the powerful Omni Consumer Products (OCP) corporation seeking to privatise law enforcement, Murphy's remains are used in an experimental programme to create the ultimate crime-fighting machine. Reborn as RoboCop, a heavily armoured cyborg programmed to uphold the law, Murphy begins patrolling Detroit's violent streets with extraordinary strength, advanced weaponry and seemingly unwavering obedience. However, fragments of his former life gradually resurface, forcing him to confront the truth about his death, his lost humanity and the corporation responsible for his transformation. Combining explosive action, dark humour, biting corporate satire and surprisingly emotional storytelling, Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop became one of the defining science-fiction films of the 1980s.

THE DIFFERENCES

What changed in this version?

This edition of RoboCop (1987) is presented as a 1080p high-definition scan of a 35mm film source, offering an alternative viewing experience to conventional digital restorations and commercial Blu-ray releases.

A 35mm scan can preserve characteristics associated with the film's original theatrical presentation, including natural film grain, photochemical colour reproduction and the distinctive texture of analogue cinema.

Depending on the source print and scanning process, this presentation may also retain physical characteristics such as minor scratches, dust, frame instability, reel-change marks and other imperfections accumulated through handling or theatrical exhibition.

For film enthusiasts and preservation collectors, scans of original film materials provide an opportunity to experience how a film may have appeared during its theatrical life, rather than exclusively through modern digital remastering.

Unlike heavily processed presentations, a minimally processed film scan can retain much of the original photographic character, including grain structure, contrast and colour variations.

Theatrical Preservation Significance

Originally released on 17 July 1987 by Orion Pictures, RoboCop became famous for its groundbreaking practical effects, stop-motion animation, graphic violence and criticism of corporate greed.

The film exists in multiple versions, most notably the approximately 102-minute theatrical cut and the longer, more graphic director's cut.

A genuine 35mm print scan is particularly interesting to collectors because it can reveal differences in colour, contrast and overall presentation compared with modern restorations.
